Royal Thai Consulate-General, Mumbai
21 April 2017
Sawasdee and Namaste,
Welcome to the website of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Mumbai. It has been a great pleasure and challenging experience to serve as the Consul-General of Thailand in Mumbai for almost a year. The journey throughout the Consulate’s 4-state jurisdiction, namely: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa, have expanded my knowledge and admiration of India and its potentials. The numerous meetings and engagement with local political authorities (Governors and Chief Ministers), private sectors, academics and experts as well as encounters with Indians from all walks of life have convinced me of the exciting potentials and dynamism of Western India yet to be fully explored.
My first year in Mumbai has been dedicated to the promotion of 2 keys areas: business and culture. Cooperation with chambers of commerce and industry, business matching activities, organization of business trips as well as outreach to potential traders and investors are among the efforts to enhance the economic and commercial ties. For the culture part, the emphasis has been mainly on raising awareness of Thailand and its tourism among the Indians. Soft diplomacy has been employed to showcase the country’s rich culture and tradition through the first Thai Film Festival in Mumbai and a series of tourism promotion events. Over 2 dozens successful food promotion and demonstration activities also prove the strong and steady increased popularity of Thai cuisine in India.
What I would choose as my proudest achievement is definitely the organization of the cultural event “Namaste Thailand in Mumbai 2017,” to commemorate 70 years of diplomatic ties between Thailand and India. The event was held in March at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralaya, a site that holds the heart of Mumbai’s cultural and historical heritage. The celebration of our 70 years of diplomatic relations will continue throughout 2017 with a number of activities to be organized both in India and Thailand.
Looking ahead for additional areas of cooperation which will complement our ongoing trade- and cultural-oriented activities, the highlight will certainly be on innovation and technology, emphasized in both Thailand’s move towards the innovation-led “Thailand 4.0” and India’s “Industry 4.0” policies. The Consulate-General is committed to promote cooperation, investment and technological transfers in the following 6 key strategic sectors: Fintech, food and agricultural industry, aviation and defence technology, Smart City management, software, and renewable energy
We will continue our efforts to promote people-to-people contact and cultural exchange, with Buddhism being an important area Thailand can contribute back to India, the birthplace of this religion. Tourism also stays high on our priority with the proud record of over 1 million Indians visiting Thailand in 2016. We attempt to push the number even higher this year through the promotion of alternative tourism including the film shooting in Thai locations, luxury travel, wedding travel, women travelers, as well as conference and exhibition tourism and medical tourism.
Last but not least, it is the main mission of the Consulate-General to offer consular services and assistance to Thai citizens as well as visa services to Indian nationals. I would like to invite you to explore our website to learn more about the details and requirement for the services offered. You will also find information and latest news on Thailand, its economic potentials, rich culture, tourism, as well as the Consulate-General’s recent and upcoming activities on the website.
